Can I skip Halloween and head straight to Thanksgiving? I mean retailers skip August and September and head straight for Halloween...
I despise, no, I loathe, no I, ok, I HATE Halloween.
I have not been able, as of yet, to pass on this disgust to DH so we still dress our beggars up as something cute (I put my foot down at scary, not hard because we both agree on that) and we wander to strangers door to merrily ask for candy. Something we would discipline our children for the other 364 days of the year. Where's the consistency, I ask?
I glare at my brother in his mask that scares my kids every year! I mumble and grumble at the haunted houses around the neighborhood. Seriously? The "scarecrow" lying by the front door waiting to jump up and scare unsuspecting children (or stir up my hubby's wrath) even the little ones!
I know, I KNOW, all of the arguments against celebrating Halloween. I also know if my husband wants to participate we will. Submission in everything, and all.
I have however gotten him to agree that when we move and have some land we will have a weenie roast on Halloween we will call it Reformation day or something like that and invite all of our friends to come. Forgetting the evil of the day! Quickly, Lord Jesus, please!
So in light of my feelings on Halloween I think I will just skip October. Thanksgiving here I come!
I was in HomeDepot on Tuesday and they had FULLY stocked CHRISTMAS decorations for sale!!
ReplyDeleteWe may give out candy and hand out Reformation Day flyers again. We skipped it last year because Rich had Bible Study at church and I didn't want to go it alone.
You should just come visit me and we can hang with the lady up the street who tried to start her own National Patriotic Costume day a few years ago. She's more anti-H than you. ;)
Julie-
ReplyDeletewe do not do Oct.31st in our home. We did years ago. We have family fun night, and do not answer the door. My children are all ok with this, they were the ones(the older ones) who wanted to stop.
We talked about it and all agree, it is the devils day! Our little ones do not even like the day. We at one time would tape candy to gospel tracks and leave at the door. The kids would take the candy and throw the tracks on our yard.
So now the light goes off and we don't answer the door. Plus I never liked the fact of getting stuff from a stranger. In this world we live in, I just worry about that kind of stuff.
I do think you are doing the right thing by obeying your hubby. Just keep praying about it. You know God will bless you for obeying.
and as a side note why oh why do the stores feel the need to put all that awful junk out??? Do we really need 20 bloody people hanging around every where or witches all over. Sorry so long I just get worked up every Oct.!!!
Have a great day !
Blessings-
Rachelle
I'm with you on this one--both my husband and I HATE halloween!
ReplyDeleteOh, I feel your pain sweetie. :) This year we are celebrating Reformation Day instead. October 31, 1517 was the day Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the church in Wittenberg. We'll get some kind of candy we all like and read a book about Martin Luther. Cause we're geeks like that. :)
ReplyDeleteHello Lovely Lady,
ReplyDeleteAustralia has many things wrong with it - we, unlike the States, are not a "Christian" country and finding a church that stands on the authority of scripture is like finding a needle in a haystack. There is however one thing that is great about the Land of Oz - hardly anyone I know celebrates Halloween. We live in a 'country' type town - pop. of about 19000 if you include the other towns that are very close by - and we might get 3 people knock on our door asking for lollies (I refuse to say candy because its an American word and we are not in America!).
Submission is so very difficult. As the daughter of a full-on feminist Mother (non-Christian) I found it so very difficult when I first got married to even listen to what my husband said about things, let alone submitting to it. It has taken a good 5 years for me to understand biblical roles so I definitely understand your frustration. Trust God, you are doing what your supposed to and He will bless you for that. I'll pray for you :)
Lastly - the painting you have at the top of this post is beautiful. Norman Rockwell's work is amazing - his depiction of Ruby Bridges first day at school is just gorgeous - one of my favourites. You have inspired me to write a post about him - when I have finished my uni stuff and the blog bible study in off the ground - might be while actually :)
Thanks for the post, look forward to your study contributions
In Christ,
Laura xox
PS: I made a spelling error, so I had to fix it :)
Hey Jules -
ReplyDeleteWe don't celebrate it either - at least not like everyone else. Because we started NOT celebrating it a little late (we did join in the festivities in our B.C. days)it has been difficult to erase it, but instead of "trick-or-treating" we get a movie, turn off all the lights so kids won't knock on the door. We all had a craving for sweets a couple years ago and we "covertly" snuck out to the van without letting the *ghouls and goblins* (kids) see us - the girls got a big kick out of that year! While we watch a movie we endulge in a junk food night. We also play games and just call it our Harvest Party. The girls are planning this year's Harvest Party! I'm sure it will involve a whole lot more candy than I'm willing to allow, but we'll have to see!
Hhhmmm...Reformation Day...a new thought! Maybe a new tradition to start - to take the place of the ever-so-wicked Halloween.
ReplyDeleteI totally understand the submission part. I loathe Halloween, too, but my husband is not convicted that our children should not dress up and beg for candy.
ReplyDeleteOur old church used to celebrate Harvest Day on Nov. 1. Basically, we had a hayride, a bonfire, and did crafts related to leaves, games like finding things in a tub of popped corn, bobbing for apples. A much funner and less scary approach.
What bothers me is you can't go shopping or turn on the tv in October! There is all those ugly, horrible lifesize electronic ghosts and such in the stores. They scare my daughter to death. Every show on tv is Halloween themed, even on the kids channels (Nick & Disney).
I've seen alot about a month of nothing on various blogs. Maybe October will be a month of nothing for us. A fast from shopping and cable tv.
Janel, too funny. Yeah, get your Christmas stuff now because come December there will be Valentines day stuff out. I remember that from last year. YUCK!
ReplyDeleteRachelle, I hate walking into the store. Bloody, scary stuff everywhere. It's so dumb. Then we started to watch the football game Sunday and I was turning it off during commercials. You know how those are! Well, before I could turn it off a Halloween Horror Nights commercial from Universal Studios showed up on the screen. It scared me. At 2:00 in the afternoon. Seriously?
Michelle, my husband is coming around little by little. I just keep praying.
We are studying Martin Luther right now so I was kind of hoping we could do something like that...
Laura, thanks for the encouragement. I am looking forward to the Bible study as well.
Lori, sounds great. I can't wait until we get our land. Dh seemed to be all about having a weenie/marshmellow roast on Oct. 31and skipping the whole Ghosts and Goblins thing.
Calina, thats kind of what I am hoping to do when we move. I love that your church did it that way. I agree with the TV and store comment.
I am reposting my halloween post from last year. I will do it this weekend. It is the only post I have ever gotten hate mail on...it's ok though, let em hate me!
ReplyDeleteAMEN!!
ReplyDeleteI am forever referring to it as Reformation Day. And we review/remember the significance of that day.
We also try to do something fun that day, that will take us away from home. Like hike or visit a museum.
And, once its over...time to start thinking about my personal favorite holiday of the year. THANKSGIVING!!!
